BIOS Manual

Endura 945G BIOS Manual

Endura 945G BIOS Manual Preface About This Guide This manual describes the feature-set, operation, and technical details of the RadiSys
ENDURA 945G BIOS core for motherboard platforms based on an Intel 945-family
chipset and an Intel Celeron or Pentium 4 processor. The feature-set and some characteristics of the BIOS change with each new release.
Each BIOS release includes a release note describing the changes. Throughout this manual, it is assumed that you have basic knowledge of the products for
which the BIOS is used. For further information, refer to the appropriate product manuals
and documentation references listed later in this manual. Notational Conventions This manual uses the following notational conventions: Courier New: Indicates the screen text and syntax strings. Italic Courier New: Indicates the variable parameters. All numbers are decimal unless otherwise stated. Bit 0 is the low-order bit. If a bit is set to 1, the associated description is true unless otherwise stated.

Overview
The ENDURA 945G BIOS core is a single BIOS binary that is used across multiple motherboard products based on an Intel 945 family chipset.
The use of a BIOS core across many products has a number of implications.
The core BIOS is not tied to any particular platform. It should therefore be
observed as a product in its own right, with its own timeline and roadmap.
The code is written to be as general as possible within the constraints of a
common hardware core.
Each new BIOS release becomes available to all platforms concurrently,
assuming they are validated.
A new BIOS release for any given product will include more changes than
strictly necessary for that motherboard product, as the new BIOS release includes changes for other platforms.
Validation for the given BIOS release on the specific platforms is available upon request. If the early BIOS release is not going to upgrade the new releases, the appropriate products can be fitted with the plateau BIOS code. Otherwise, all the changes must be accepted to avoid branches in the code tree.

Operation
The operation of the motherboard is primarily described in the product manual. This section provides additional information on specific areas of BIOS operation.
1 .1POST
The BIOS performs a Power On Self Test (POST) upon power on or reset, which attempts to determine whether further operation is possible and that the detected configuration is expected.
When the process cannot complete normally:
If a warning occurs, a message is displayed on the primary display device but
the boot process does not stop.
If an error is detected, the boot process is halted.
Failures early on in the test can only be indicated by POST checkpoint codes. For detailed information, see BIOS POST Checkpoint Codes on page 27. These codes are also displayed on the BIOS LED located by the motherboard I/O connectors.
The Quick Power On-Self-Test allows much of the POST process to be skipped to speed up the boot process.
1.2 Boot
Process
Once the initial part of the self-test process is completed, the display device is initialized and boot messages can then be sent to the display. By default, the display is in Quietboot mode, in which the customizable logo is visible. If the Quietboot mode is disabled, then sign-on and test progress messages are visible. Pressing Tab during Quietboot switches the display to text mode, which provides the progress messages.
The BIOS will then search for boot devices in the order configured by the BIOS Setup and load an operating system from the first boot device found. Control is then passed to the operating system and the motherboard BIOS plays no further part in the boot except to provide run-time services
1.3Initiating
Setup
During the boot, pressing the 'Del' key on the keyboard requests the Setup utility be launched once the self-test is complete and before searching for a boot device. See the Setup description later in this document to describe the operation of this utility. After changes are made the motherboard loads the new settings and resets - re-starting the entire boot process.
1.4 Configure and Recovery Modes
The motherboard can operate in one of three modes:
Normal: The mode should be returned to normal before re-starting.
Recovery: It expects a recovery disk in flexible disk drive A and will wait until
one is found before performing the recovery operation.
Configure: It forces the BIOS into Setup with the manufacturer defaults loaded.

1.5 BIOS Update Guide
1.5.1 Update BIOS without CD-ROM
1. Set JP2 to location 1-2 to unlock the Bootblock.
2. Make a Windows boot disk, typically Floppy Disk. It can also be Hard Disk or USB
Disk, and so on.
3. Copy the following files to the boot disk:

Latest BIOS binary file, for instance, 5J1R2P17.bin

BIOS update program, for instance, awdflash.exe

Flash batch file, for instance, f2p17.bat
4. Change the Endura 945 motherboard CMOS Setup setting to boot from the disk.
5. Save CMOS settings and reboot to DOS.
6. Type the file name of the flash batch file in DOS prompt line, for instance,
f2p17.bat.
The BIOS update process begins. Wait for the process to end and then reboot the system.
7. Set JP2 to location 2-3 to lock the Bootblock.
8. Power off the system.
9. Set JP1 to location 1-2 for a few seconds to clear CMOS data and then set it back
to normal location 2-3.
1.5.2 Update BIOS with CD-ROM
1. Set JP2 to location 1-2 to unlock the Bootblock.
2. Make a Windows floppy boot disk. Put it into the floppy drive.
3. Copy below files to the floppy boot disk:

Latest BIOS binary file, for instance, 5J1R2P17.bin

BIOS update program, for instance, awdflash.exe

Flash batch file, for instance, f2p17.bat
4. Run Nero and use the floppy disk to make a bootable CD.
5. Change the 945 motherboard CMOS setup setting to boot from CD-ROM drive.
6. Put the bootable CD into CD-ROM drive, save CMOS settings and reboot to DOS.
7. Type the file name of the flash batch file in DOS prompt line, for instance,
f2p17.bat.
The BIOS update process begins. Wait for the process to end and then reboot the system.
8. Set JP2 to location 2-3 to lock the Bootblock.
9. Power off the system.

Setup
Utility
The BIOS incorporates a Setup utility that allows the user to alter a variety of system options through a set of hierarchical menus. Not all options are available with all products, depending on BIOS customization.
The current settings are stored in the CMOS RAM area and any changes can be copied back to this area via the Exit menu. The operation of the BIOS defaults is described later in this document.
To start the utility, you must press Del during the early stages of POST once power on. Note that this functionality operates with PS/2 keyboards, and USB keyboards if enabled.
The following table briefly describes the primary menu structures and relevant functions.
